It’s a Mad House. A Mad House. — The Phenomenom of the Planet of the Apes

This 2008 Thanksgiving Weekend, the Fox Movie Channel (FMC) showed all five of the original “Planet of the Apes” movies. The first two “Planet of the Apes” and “Beneath the Planet of the Apes” were the best of the series. I think one reason I fell in love with these movies was that “Planet of the Apes’ was one of the first movies my parents let me go to by myself.

It was 1968, the Castro Theatre in San Francisco. We lived about 6 blocks away on Hartford Street. My father, a long haul truck driver was away on one of his trips to somewhere in the United States. My mother thought I wa sold enough to walk to the movies and see this one by myself. I can still remember as the theatre darkened and the curtian rose and seeinf the 20th Century Fox Log then hearing from the speakers, “And that completes my final report until we reach touchdown. We’re now on full automatic, in the hands of the computers. I have tucked my crew in for the long sleep and I’ll be joining them soon. In less than an hour, we’ll finish our sixth month out of Cape Kennedy. Six months in deep space – by our time, that is. According to Dr. Haslein’s theory of time, in a vehicle travelling nearly the speed of light, the Earth has aged nearly 700 years since we left it, while we’ve aged hardly at all. Maybe so. This much is probably true – the men who sent us on this journey are long since dead and gone. You who are reading me now are a different breed – I hope a better one. I leave the 20th century with no regrets. But one more thing – if anybody’s listening, that is. Nothing scientific. It’s purely personal. But seen from out here everything seems different. Time bends. Space is boundless. It squashes a man’s ego. I feel lonely. That’s about it. Tell me, though. Does man, that marvel of the universe, that glorious paradox who sent me to the stars, still make war against his brother? Keep his neighbor’s children starving?” While Charleton Heston was giving this speach, the camera opens to him and we are taken on a great trip. for those of you unfamiliar with the series of movies here is a breakdown without giving up to much.

“Planet of the Apes” – 1968 — Taylor and two other astronauts come out of deep hibernation to find that their ship has crashed. Escaping with little more than clothes they find that they have landed on a planet where men are pre-lingual and uncivilized while apes have learned speech and technology. One of the men is shot and killed and the others are taken to the apes’ city. There, one undergoes brain surgery and is put into a state of living death.Taylor is captured after damaging his throat so that he is silent and cannot communicate with the apes. Soon Taylor finds himself among the hunted, his life in the hands of a benevolent chimpanzee scientist. After being put through ape trial he escapes with a female human native to the planet. After helping his ape friends escape a religious heresy trial he escapes out into the wilderness with the female. There he learns the planet might not be so distant after all.

“Beneath the Planet of the Apes” — 1970 — Astronaut Brent is sent to rescue Taylor but crash lands on the Planet of the Apes, just like Taylor did in the original film. Taylor has disappeared into the Forbidden Zone so Brent and Nova try to follow and find him. He discovers a cult of humans that fear the Apes’ latest military movements and finds himself in the middle. Tension mounts to a climactic battle between ape and man deep in the bowels of the planet.

“Escape from the Planet of the Apes” — 1971 — Cornelius and Zira, the simian ape couple from the first two ape films, flee from their doomed planet (after the events in Beneath…) in the same spaceship used by Taylor in the first film, and travel back through the same space/time porthole and land on late 20th Century Earth where they are received with fascination and fear from the people they meet, where they face persecution similar to what Taylor suffered in the future, and discover the origins of the stream of events that will shape their world.

“Conquest of the Planet of the Apes” — 1972 — Cornelius and Zira’s son Caesar leads apes to revolution in this installment of the apes saga. Dogs and cats have been wiped out by a plague and now apes are household pets that are treated like slaves. Along comes Ceasar, son of Cornelius and Zira who died in the third film, who leads his chimp brothers in rebellion against the human oppressors, thus creating the time loop that leads to the first film.

“Battle for the Planet of the Apes” — 1973 — After conquering the oppressive humans in “Conquest for the Planet of the Apes”, Caeser must now keep the peace amongst the humans and apes. Gorilla General Aldo views things differently, and tries to cause an ape civil war. In the meantime, other human survivors learn of the ape city, and decide they want to take back civilization for themselves, thus setting the stage of warring ape factions and humans.

“Battle for the Planet of the Apes” ended the movie series but not the fans need for more of the apes. In future articles I will talk about the two television series and the remake from 2001. I’ll also go into more details about each of the movies.

Why I think I am the Way I Am

Life is tough. I spent the first 47 years of my life as an overweight and shy guy. I was what some of you would call a loner. I did not want to associate with anyone and wanted to be by myself. Part of it was due to a lack of confidence in myself. Another part was the fact that I would go through bouts of depression. The depression wasn’t so severe that I could not bounce back, it was just feeling sorry for myself. I never contemplated suicide, but I did consider running away and leaving no trace.

In High School I did the things that were expected of me, I went out with the girls, I joined the Boy Scouts I tried to socialize with other students. But one thing kept coming back, I felt I was being the butt of everyones jokes.

I worked hard throughout my life. I found a job with AT&T and worked there for 30 plus years. I was never good at taking care of myself, but I could take care of others. In my mind I did not matter. That was until work sent me to therapy because of an emotional outburst I had. The therapist told me that I took on too much and never did anything for me. I needed to let my inner child out to play once in awhile. Easier said than done, but I tried.

Life went on on with it no change in my personality. Then on September 26, 2006 I had a rebirthday, I went under Gastric Bypass Surgery. I lost about 250 pounds and started to feel more confident. For the first time in my life I set aside what other people wanted me to do, and started to do the things I wanted to do. But I found with the weight loss I started to forget things in the short term. Then the most wonderful thing happened in my life, I started to talk to this wonderful woman on line.

It turned out she worked one floor above me and had for a long time. We started dating and fell in love. We married on August 18, 2007 and I’m very happy and thankful I have her in my life. She has two wonderful daughters who have a hard time understanding me and are starting me back on my downward spiral. They have no respect for me and can do nothing but criticize and joke about me and that makes me upset. They need to realize that I have 50 years of habits that I am trying to break and each time they make a comment that upsets me it’s a step back. I work with positive reinforcement not the negative that they keep sending out.

I love these two like they were my own, and I respect them but I think I deserve a little respect. I would do anything for my family and if they ask for something I will give it to them if I am able. All I ask is don’t point out the flaws in a person, point out the strengths you will go farther in your relationship.

Do Bass Like Crank Baits, Naturally?

A collection of Crank Baits.

A collection of Crank Baits.

I recently got a great purchase from eBay. It was a hardcover book called “The Best of BASSMaster”. It is a collection of articles from BASSMaster Magazine covering the years 1968 to 1980. For a beginning Bass Fisherman, the articles are great and this is one of the best that I’ve read so far. It’s from a larger article called “The ‘Crank Bait System’” written by Bill Phillips. I would tell you the year but that information is not available. Here is the article in it’s entirety.

Should the art of lure painting imitate life? Do naturlized baits help you catch fish?

the answer from one bassin’ biologist who dedicates about 200 days a year to uderstanding why bass bite, is an unequivocal…”probably not.”

Bill Phillips of Auburn university in Alabama, who is working toward a Ph.D in fisheries biology, is also the 36-year-old president of Angling Research Associates, an independent research firm for the tackle industry.

According to his tests:

“Under most conditions, the natural lures failed to compete favorably with really good, contrasty color patterns like bone/orange or yellow/black, especially in greenish-tinted, productive waters.

“The catch per hour rate for the baby bass and rainbow trout patterns on Rebel Deep Maxi-R lures, for example, were 0.4 and 0.3 fish, respectivley, while the bone/orange belly Deep Maxi-R produced 1.2 fish per hour.”

“There were, however, notable excetions to this rule. For example, in clear water lakes where a sizable portion of the bass population is made upof spotted or Kuntucky bass, naturals outproduced all other color patterns. Crawfish-like Deep Mini-Rs were especially effective, yeilding 1.25 fish per hour, as were shad-imitation Natural Ike, which caught 1.1 fish per hour.”

But Philips says it’s the paint, rather than the paint job, that’d the key.

“Quite often, the poorest imitations were among the best,” according to Angling Research Associates’ field testers. “For instance, Natural Ike’s crawfish pattern is not convincing at all — whoever heard of a crawfish shaped like a fish? But the pattern produced fish on numerous occasions for our field agents, apparently because it was basically a light patern of contrasty colorswhich stand out against the aquatic backgroound.” Philips reports.

And, he says, one of the best looking imitations — the bluegill — was the poorest performer.

“Two-and-a-half-inch long bluegillsaren’t dark blue, green and orange, the wai bait manufaturers usuallyt pait them,” Phillips explains. “They’re pale yellow and silvery, with light olive backs. But the worst fault of the natural bream baits is that they do not contrast with the background. Bass can’t see them.”

The problem with natural-finish luresis that they emphasize the one most important defense a prey fish posesses — protective coloration.

Baby bass, crappie, shad and crawfishare colored the way they are to keep preditors, such as big bassfrom seeing them, biologist Bill Phillips points out.

“So why copy the item least likely to be seen?” Philips asks. “To sell lures, for one thing. And because the lures are certainly beautiful to the human eye, if not the bass’ eye, most of us will buy them.”

After reading this article I have decided that as Bass Fishermen, we need to make the choice for ourselves as to what works. From what I can see Bass do like Crank Baits.

My Love of Star Trek

Welcome to my little corner of the Star Trek Universe. Here you will find out about Star Trek and what it means to me.

I mention that this is Gene Roddenberry’s dream based on the way the series was written. It is a dream for all people. To live in peace.

Do you remember the first time you ever heard these words: “Space. The Final Frontier” I do. I was 8 years old at the time and I saw a show on a Tuesday Night where a shaggy monster was attacking the crew members of a spaceship. The episode was “The Man Trap”. At six years old I did not fully understand the show, but my father enjoyed the show so we watched it.

When I got into High School I found a couple of other people who where interested in Science Fiction. They reintroduced me to the wonders of Star Trek. Throughout the course of this Blog I will talk Star Trek and discuss how Star Trek changed the world we live in.

What the Tigers Need To Do This Year.

On Friday the 14th of November the free agency market opens up widely. Already Kenny Rogers has filed for free agency and Dontrelle Willis is still an unknown factor after injuring his knee last season. The Tigers had a lousy 74-88 season. With a team batting average of .271 and a team ERA of 4.90, the Tigers could use all the help they can get.

First lets shore up the cleanup hitter with another power hitter behind Gary Sheffield. In the Free agency market right now you have Ken Griffey Jr. or even Jason Giambi. If they sign Giambi that can help at 1st base and in the outfield.

Next the Tigers need to look at pitching. Just get a couple of Starters that can go deep in the game. That’s all I ask.

I don’t expect the Tigers to get to the World series but to play above 500 ball. So lets see what they do in this their rebuilding off season.
